On the eve of the Unionist capture of New Orleans, freed slave Jefferson attempts to help the woman he loves, a half-caste woman named Carly forced to work as a prostitute. What Jefferson does not realise is that Carly was cursed by her mother at conception. Part Mythos entity, she uses her knowledge of dark magic to force Jefferson's soul from his body so that it may be inhabited by the "Great One," Carly's new mate.
