|Date of Release:||December 24, 1896|
The Haunted Castle, or Le Manoir du Diable (meaning The Manor of the Devil) in French, is a three-minute-long French film made by Georges Méliès. Released December 24, 1896, it is considered by many to be perhaps the first horror film.
The film starts with a large bat flying into a castle. After it enters, it circles slowly before changing into Mephistopheles. He then procedes to create skeletons, ghosts, and witches from a cauldron.
One of the summoned cavaliers holds up a crucifix and banishes Mephistopheles in a cloud of smoke.
