Recrudescence

Recrudescence is a novelette written by Leonard Carpenter. It was first published in Amazing Stories, January 1988. It was reprinted in the 1989 anthology The Year's Best Horror Stories: Series XVII, edited by Karl Edward Wagner. It was reprinted again in the 1996 anthology The Cthulhu Cycle, edited by Robert M. Price.
