Kiryu is a giant robot kaiju that first appeared in Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla.
Kiryu was built around the bones of the original Godzilla that attacked Tokyo in 1954. It was built in order to defend Tokyo against the current Godzilla's attacks or attacks by any other Kaiju.
In Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla the bones and spirit of Godzilla inside Kiryu caused it to go rogue. It was eventually corrected and went into battle with Godzilla, fighting to a stalemate, both taking heavy damage. Later, the two battled again and though Kiryu bested Godzilla and had the opportunity to finish him off, the Godzilla spirit inside it caused it to instead shut down, deciding not to kill another of its kind.
