Grave Encounters 2 is a 2012 Canadian-American horror film, directed by John Poliquin, written by The Vicious Brothers and the sequel to the 2011 film Grave Encounters. It is shot in found footage style like its predecessor and follows a group of devoted fans who break into the same psychiatric hospital to investigate whether the events of the previous film actually happened, quickly becoming the targets of the hospital's malevolent entities.

Plot[]

Grave Encounters 2 follows film student and his group of friends as they eventually come to produce a film about the original Grave Encounters movie. Alex believes that the first film was real, despite the objections of his friends and girlfriend. He posts an online plea for any information involving the film. He receives a message from an individual, known only as "DeathAwaits666" who claims to live next door to the hospital and offers help with researching the film. The online contact leads him to the mother of the original film director. She leads them to believe that Lance is still alive, but after talking to her caretaker, it is revealed that she has severe dementia and does not realize that her son is actually dead.

Upon further investigation, he finds out that the original people from the first movie have all either gone missing or been reported as having died. Alex then gets a mysterious message pointing him to the office of the producer of the original film. Upon confronting him, he confesses to Alex that the film is true. Later, he receives a message from the online contact again. It contains the coordinates of the hospital. He and his friends head off to Canada to go to the hospital. On their first attempt to explore the hospital, a security guard interrupts before they can even exit the car and forces them to leave. Once they arrive at their hotel room, Alex discovers he has received another message from his mysterious online contact instructing the group to meet him at 3:00 a.m. in the room on the western end of the service tunnels. They sneak onto the premises and cut the chain on the door to gain access to the building.

The group sets up their cameras and ventures into the specified room, only to find it empty. Upon further investigation, they discover a Ouija board has been carved into a table inside the room. Using it to communicate with the spirits of the hospital they realize that their online contact is not a person, but a paranormal entity.

They are instructed by the entity to film everything. The spirit then proceeds to violently throw the table across the room. Out of fear, the group flees and hides in one of the rooms of the hospital. They barricade the door, which is broken down by the security guard who noticed the broken chain on the front door. He rounds them up and forces them into the lobby of the hospital. Once there, they all hear heavy footsteps on the floor above. The security guard ignores the group's warnings about the danger the hospital presents and goes upstairs to investigate, leaving the students behind. They hear gunshots fired and run upstairs to see what happened.

The security guard is gone, leaving only his flashlight and multiple bullet casings on the floor. Panicked, Alex finally agrees to leave but refuses to go until they gather all the cameras and equipment. They split up into smaller groups so that they may do so quicker. During the process an evil entity shoves Jared out of a window to his death. After reviewing the footage, the group realizes what has happened to their friend and frantically tries to find a way out. As in the original film, they are met with solid walls where exits used to be. They stumble across the pediatric ward, where they see a rocking horse moving. Alex steps forward to investigate but the rocking immediately ceases. Turning, they notice a young girl sitting on one of the beds brushing her hair. She speaks to them then contorts her face in a demonic fashion and chases them from the room. In her panic, Tessa runs ahead of the others and turns a corner. Once the remaining students turn the corner, the wall has closed up behind her, separating them. She frantically tries to find the others, but is violently attacked by an entity in the hallway and it crushes her skull, killing her instantly. Then, the entity drags her lifeless body away.

The surviving students continue to wander the halls in search of an exit and discover the security guard. He is strapped to a gurney, and hooked up to a machine used to electrically shock patients into "sanity" during the era in which the hospital was functional. Despite their attempts to free him, he is electrocuted to death right before their eyes. The three remaining students leave the gruesome scene and continue their search for a way out. They discover a window with a thin metal grate. Trevor pries it open only to be attacked by a demonic creature. They flee, suddenly able to find the exit. In front of the hospital, they encounter the security guard's car with lights and sirens running; the mutilated body of Jared is sprawled across the hood. The trio run to their van and flee the scene, returning to the hotel room. They attempt to pack their things and return home. However, after their descent to the hotel lobby, the elevator doors open up to tunnels of the hospital revealing that their "escape" was actually a cruel illusion created by the evil within the hospital. They start down the tunnels together. The pipes burst and spray steam around them, temporarily splitting them up. Once they regroup, they are confronted with Sean (a.k.a. Lance) sprinting towards them and directing them to follow him. He leads them into a hidden room, via the air conditioning system.

They discover that Lance has been living in the building for the past nine years, subsiding on rats and water from the hospital toilets. It becomes obvious that Lance is incredibly insane. He claims to be able to communicate with the entities that possess the building due to the lobotomy performed on him by Dr. Friedkin. Lance shows them a red door that stands alone in the middle of the tunnel that would logically lead to nowhere, but Lance tells them it is the way out. It is wrapped in chains. The group tells Lance that they have bolt cutters that could break the chain, but their bag of tools was lost in one of the hallways. Lance leads them into the hospital to find the bag. After successfully retrieving the bolt cutters, Lance instructs them to rest for a while. While they sleep, an unseen force picks up one of the cameras and films each of them. Trevor wakes up and takes a camera with him to the restroom to record his last will and testament.

Lance follows him and kills him, apologizing and saying that the entities made him do it. Alex and Jennifer wake to find Trevor's body and discover Lance and their equipment have disappeared. After trying to comfort Jennifer with the promise that he will not let anything happen to her, Alex notices that Lance left his map behind. Lance is shown filming himself while traveling to the red door. He cuts the chains and enters, only to realize the door leads to nowhere. Frenzied, he begins talking to the entities, who respond by writing on the wall, instructing Lance to collect the tapes and "finish the film" in order to draw more curious thrillseekers to the hospital to be its victims.

Only in this way will it allow a single survivor to leave. Meanwhile, Alex and Jennifer wander the tunnels again, looking for an exit using Lance's map. They enter the surgical ward and see Dr. Friedkin's satanic altar. The light flashes on, prompting the pair to hide. They see the entities of the doctor and his nurses bring in a patient and perform a lobotomy on him. The nurses then present an infant to Dr. Friedkin, who proceeds to sacrifice it and drain the blood onto the patient. One of the nurses discovers them due to Jennifer's terrified whimpers. She approaches their hiding place, contorting her face in a demonic fashion. The couple flees in horror and find themselves back at the red door. Lance appears and demands they hand over their tapes.

Alex refuses and Lance attempts to kill him. During the struggle, a void opens up on one of the walls and sucks Lance in. Alex, in the meantime, has realized that Lance was telling the truth about how to escape and closes in on Jennifer, smashing her face in with the camera. He then looks into the lens and promises he will finish the film and will not let the evil entities down. He exits the hospital through the red door which forms a portal to outside world now that he is the lone survivor and has promised to finish the film.

Alex is then shown wandering the streets of Los Angeles, where he is arrested. The last scene shows that the footage has been made into a film, with the producer of the Grave Encounters films heaping praise on Alex's talent for filmmaking and reassuring the public that everything they see is staged.
