Dr. Richard Vollin, played by Bela Lugosi, is a character in the 1935 film The Raven.
Vollin is a retired brilliant surgeon. When a car crash nearly kills Jean Thatcher, he initially refuses to help since he was more preoccupied with negotiating the sell of his Edgar Allan Poe collection.
Eventually he helps her and over time the two develop a fondness for each other. Thatcher is engaged to Jerry Halden.
A serial killer named Edmond Bateman who felt his ugly visage was the reason he was so murderous. He asks for Vollin's help to help him so that he can reform. Instead Vollin turns him into an ugly monster and says he will only fix him if he does his bidding.
