Chris "Hoop" Hooper is a character in the novel Alien: Out of the Shadows, written by Tim Lebbon.
Hoop was the chief engineer of the DSMO Marion, a mining ship. While a pair of dropships containing miners returning from LV-178, it is quickly apparent there is a deadly alien onboard both. One manages to automatically dock with Marion while the other crashes into the ship, crippling it.
Soon after the shuttle Narcissus arrives, carrying Ellen Ripley in hypersleep after the events of Alien. After awakening, Ellen and Hoop, and a small band of survivors evade xenomorphs while traveling to LV-178 in order to power up her escape shuttle so they can get to safety.
While Ripley escapes in the Narcissus, Hoop escapes on the Samson. He watches the Marion break up in LV-178's atmosphere, looking down on the obliterated mining complex. Cast away, with no faster-than-light or stasis capability, Hoop helps himself to a bottle of bourbon and records a distress call, declaring himself last survivor of the Deep Space Mining Orbital Marion.
